With all sports there are ups and downs throughout a season. But it’s the finish of the season that matters most. Team Competitive finished out the 2012 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series with strong performances. The season finale was held this past Saturday at Firebird Raceway near Phoenix, Arizona. Team Competitive’s two young guns, Geoffrey Cooley and Dave Mason Jr., did not disappoint as they drove their Competitive Metals / Romney for President themed race cars to the podium placing 2nd (Cooley) and 3rd (Mason) for the final point’s race.
The two rookie drivers proved throughout the year they will be contenders for 2013 race wins and championships. While neither driver found the illusive win, both battled against series veterans racing to podium finishes and led several laps throughout the season. Geoffrey Cooley finished out his first year in Pro Buggy with five podium finishes earning 3rd in the point’s championship and the Rookie of the Year title. Dave Mason Jr. fought back from a rough start to the season to finish in the top ten in the points championship. Mason Jr. qualified with the fastest times setting the pole for the final three races of the year and drove to two podium finishes.
Other Team Competitive short course drivers included Justin Smith in Pro Lite and Nick Tyree in Pro 2. Smith conquered his first ever season in the Pro Lite class. He started the season with a newly built truck and an all volunteer crew. Despite several mechanical challenges throughout the year the team never gave up. The independent team worked hard throughout the year to battle their way to two podium finishes. Nick Tyree was improving race by race in the Pro 2 class until a mid-season injury ended his season. Tyree had landed a top five prior to the injury that cut the season short. He’s been healing and preparing for a 2013 comeback.
Team Competitive was formed by Greg and Angela Parker, owners of Competitive Metals, the leading provider of metal products to the off-road industry. The Parkers have been long time supporters of the sport through their participation as sponsors, competitors and suppliers. Their enthusiasm and generosity towards the young men and women of off road racing deserves an award of its own. However, they prefer to let the young drivers shine as the future of the sport. Team Competitive owes a great deal of gratitude to the Parkers and the entire team at Competitive Metals, Inc. As the sun sets on the 2012 season the excitement is already in the air for 2013.
